Key Components of Sightline for Solaris Systems

Comprehensive Metric Collection

  • Monitors metrics across all major Solaris operating system components, ensuring a complete performance overview.
  • Gathers hundreds of data points spanning CPU, memory, swap, disk I/O, file systems, network, IPC, kernel, and process activity.
  • Supports additional metrics available to the system manager through the Sightline Power Agent's extensible architecture.

Correlation Analysis

  • Compares data from multiple systems and subsystems for a holistic understanding of performance across the environment.
  • Offers insight into how application activity and workload behavior impact system resources at every level.
  • Surfaces potential cause-and-effect relationships between processes on the same system or across other systems in the infrastructure.

Interface Agents

  • Extend monitoring capabilities to databases, middleware, and external services supported by the Sightline platform.
  • Support integration with SNMP devices for availability and performance data retrieval across third-party hardware.

Real-Time Insights and Reporting

  • Deliver immediate visibility into resource utilization and application impact on Solaris system performance.
  • Provide detailed and flexible reporting, customizable by user and distributable via web access or automated email.

Modules Overview

The Sightline Power Agent for Solaris Systems provides a robust set of modules designed to monitor critical system-level metrics and external services, ensuring optimal performance and a detailed understanding of system behavior.

CPU Statistics

Tracks global and per-CPU utilization including System, User, and Wait I/O modes. Reports context switching, run queue and swap queue rates, process states, and system call types to expose operating system overhead

Memory and Swap Statistics

Monitors memory utilization, paging activity, and swap usage to prevent system instability. Buffer Cache and Name Cache metrics report read/write rates, hits, and misses to balance I/O performance against memory consumption.

Disk I/O Statistics

Reports kernel-level disk metrics including percent busy, traffic volume, queue length, wait times, service times, and read/write distribution to identify storage bottlenecks.

Network Statistics

Provides controller-level analysis of traffic rates, packet counts, TCP statistics, collisions per second, and resends per second to identify network issues and reliability risks.

NFS Activity

Captures Network File System traffic, call rates, data volume, and failure rates. Client and server statistics include calls, bad calls, reads, and writes to quickly identify NFS bottlenecks.

RPC Activity

Reports client and server statistics for Remote Procedure Call volumes and rates between hosts, providing visibility into distributed workload behavior.

Kernel and Callout Monitoring

Tracks callout table utilization to prevent system instability caused by timer exhaustion. Kernel metrics include tunable parameters and configuration values tailored to the Solaris platform.

File System Statistics

Monitors space utilization, traffic volume, and inode usage across all mounted file systems — critical for proactive capacity management where file system sizing is fixed.

Process Statistics

Collects event-based process data including process ID, owning user, task name, priority, CPU and memory utilization, block reads/writes, and page fault counts — supporting rapid root cause analysis and workload optimization.

Zones

The Power Agent for Solaris Systems collects resource utilization statistics for both the global zone and non-global zones, providing visibility into each virtual server container.

Achieving Peak System Performance

The Sightline Power Agent gives Solaris system managers the tools needed to gain deep insight into system performance, ensuring reliability, efficiency, and the ability to proactively address issues before they impact users. Detailed metrics across CPU, memory, disk, network, and more enable smarter decision-making and optimized resource utilization.
