Sightline EDM 7.2: Next-Gen Observability via OpenTelemetry, Kafka, and Enhanced Correlation

A Modernized Core, Built to Last

The foundation of 7.2 is a top-to-bottom platform refresh. The application server moves from WildFly 37.0.1 to 39.0.1, the bundled database steps up to the PostgreSQL 18.4, and SightlineDB, our time-series engine, migrates from InfluxDB 1.7 to the 2.8 line. These aren’t cosmetic version bumps. Current, fully supported components keep your deployment secure and performant for years to come, and the InfluxDB migration went through extensive data-integrity validation, rollback testing, and performance benchmarking so historical metrics carry over intact and queries stay fast. Best of all, the installer handles all three upgrades with migration scripts, so there’s nothing extra for your team to manage.

More Ways to Bring Your Data Together

EDM 7.2 widens the range of systems you can pull into a single pane of glass. EDM now speaks OpenTelemetry (OTLP), the open standard for modern observability, with a guided setup wizard in the Admin UI and out-of-the-box support for Protobuf payloads. A new Kafka connection subtype gives you native Kafka monitoring over JMX, alongside everything else EDM watches. And while EDM has long sent and received SNMP traps, it can now send v2c and v3 traps, as well, forwarding events to outbound SNMP v2c and v3 destinations so they flow into your broader network-management and alerting infrastructure. IIS HTTP Log data also gains a per-row event-time column, so event timelines line up exactly with what happened.

Security, Tightened End to End

Security was a defining theme of this release, spanning the wire between components, the certificates that protect your console, and the credentials behind SNMP. Traffic between Power Agents and the Data Collector Service can now be encrypted with TLS or mTLS, with sensible defaults and clear messages the moment two ends disagree on settings. The Generate CSR workflow captures the full field set enterprises require and stores the complete certificate chain—no more manual assembly. You can now replace an expired certificate that shares the same hostname without juggling aliases, and if you configured HTTPS by hand, EDM’s “Activate HTTPS” flow detects and preserves that setup instead of overwriting your manually configured Elytron resources. SNMPv3 polling and trap handling are also more reliable across multi-device environments, with per-device isolation that keeps one device’s credentials from interfering with another’s.

Faster Root Cause and Self-Explaining Metrics

Two refinements make everyday operations smoother. The correlation engine—which connects related events and metrics to help you find root cause faster—received usability and accuracy improvements based on real-world feedback, so the relationships it surfaces are clearer and more trustworthy. And EDM 7.2 moves rich metric definitions directly into the admin database. Explain Metric has always let you click a metric—including UNIX metrics and charts that combine several at once—to see what it means; storing those definitions centrally now makes them far easier to update going forward and sets the stage for a future release that will let you add your own metric definitions. 

A Clear Path Forward—and Help When You Need It

For teams still on legacy infrastructure, 7.2 introduces a structured, per-connection TraceFile-to-SightlineDB migration that moves your data connection by connection, complete with validation scripts, data-integrity validation, and a step-by-step customer guide so the move is predictable and verifiable. Learning EDM no longer means leaving it, either—a new Help button opens an integrated User Guide and training material right in the UI, so answers are a click away while you work. And Windows shops get immediate value from a new “IIS Throughput” default report and new report templates, with ready-made charts, templates, and expressions that deliver useful insight from day one, no setup required.
